Dazed and Converse have announced Janice Mascarenhas as the winner of the 2021 Dazed 100 and the Open to Change Fund. In 2021 Dazed and Converse continued their partnership with the launch of Dazed 100, the definitive list featuring 100 people shaping youth culture by powering change in their local community with global impact.

Afro-Brazilian artist and hairstylist Janice Mascarenhas creates thought-provoking and visually striking styles out of black hair – braids spelling out words, dreadlocks made into sculptures, and hairstyles laced with flowers, miniature figures and clay masks. Based in São Paulo and born in a favela outside Rio, they grew up around beauty salons. “I watched my mother (a manicurist) and her co-workers rebuild people’s self-esteem with their hands and I fell in love with that space.”
