Facebook has announced the launch of its new app Study, which will allow users to sell the company their personal data on how they use competitors’ apps. Facebook has said it is recruiting participants to download the new app from the Google Play store. The app will transfer data to Facebook on what other apps the users have, what features they use, and how much time is spent on them.
Dan Goldstein, the president and owner of full-service digital marketing agency Page 1 Solutions, has commented: "I'm surprised Facebook went ahead with an app that offers users money for their data when so many consumers are concerned about privacy. This move signals, at best, willful ignorance on Facebook's part to the current climate of online security and data privacy. Facebook will likely view the performance of Study as a barometer of consumer trust.'
