W Galen Weston, the Canadian retail tycoon behind Primark and Selfridges, has passed away aged 80. Weston was the third generation of his family to lead George Weston Limited, a retail empire founded by his grandfather, which he expanded. The company, now run by his son, Galen Weston, controls Primark and Selfridges in the UK, as well as a number of Canadian businesses. The empire also includes the luxury store Fortnum & Mason, along with food brands including Twinings teas, Kingsmill Bakery and Dorset Cereals. 

Weston, who had Canadian and British nationality, died peacefully at home after a long illness, his daughter Alannah Weston, Chairman of Selfridges Group confirmed.

Alannah said in an online statement, that "He was a true visionary and his energy electrified everyone who was lucky enough to work with him. My father’s gift was people. He was happiest walking the shop floor with my mother and talking to our team members and customers. The warmth and dedication of our brilliant teams made him hugely proud and he was always inspired by their creativity and passion for customers.

"This is sad news for our family, our Group and the many colleagues and friends that were such an important part of his life, but it is also an opportunity to celebrate his inspirational leadership and all the things we loved about him. "His positive energy, faith in great people and excitement about the future will always be part of who we are."
