Allure has launched The Melanin Edit – an initiative that will explore every facet of a melanin-rich life – from the most innovative treatments, to the social and emotional realities – all while spreading Black Pride.
The platform launches with "How Colorism Shapes Black Girlhood," a series of three anchor-essays by Zeba Blay, Michaela Angela Davis, and Ateh Jewel, which provide a framework for the project and will also appear in the June/July print issue.
The first installment of content appearing on The Melanin Edit also includes roundups of the best suncare products for brown skin; reporting on the skin conditions that are most common in, or unique to, melanin-rich skin; and discussions with several Black dermatologists about what things were like in the past, where we are now, and the changes they’re hoping to see in the field. The creative collaborators behind the project include Dayna’s House and photographer Delphine Diallo.
This will be an ongoing series for Allure, spearheaded by the Black editors on staff.
In the future, The Melanin Edit will involve conversations about the global diaspora, texturism, and cultural appropriation in the beauty industry.
