Barbie has honoured model, Adwoa Aboah by unveiling a one-of-a-kind ‘Shero' Barbie doll in her likeness ahead of Barbies’s 60th anniversary on 9 March and International Women’s Day on 8 March. Founding Gurls Talk, an online community for young women to discuss issues such as mental health, education, selfcare and relationships, Adwoa has been honoured by Barbie for her vocal and passionate support of girls, and for using her platform to empower girls today.
Visiting Barbie’s LA HQ and working closely with its artisans, Adwoa chose for her doll to be wearing an homage to the sequinned Halpern outfit - including Stephen Jones turban and Christian Louboutin platform sandals - she wore to accept her Model of the Year accolade at the Fashion Awards 2017, a seminal moment in her modelling career. Commenting on her Barbie, Adwoa said: “I love that Barbie offers so much choice now, but to see my own doll that has my freckled skin, skin colour, shaved head and my tattoo’s is so meaningful to me.”
In its 60th year, Barbie will further establish itself as the ultimate empowerment brand for the next generation by spotlighting female role models who are breaking boundaries through its largest and most diverse celebration of global role models ever.
