The Black British Media Society has officially launched today (22 June) as a supportive and united representation for Black voices across the media industry. Founded by Black media workers across the UK from titles including Daily Mirror, Stylist, OK!, Daily Mail and The Metro, the BBMS will promote equality of opportunity within the British media industry.
The Black British Media Society strives to increase the representation of Black voices in newsrooms across the industry and wants an active change in the hierarchy so that more senior staff, managers and members of the board are Black, as well as at entry-level. They will also be contacting publishers in the hope of helping them better understand, treat and represent Black voices in Britain.
The BBMS ask that publishers inform them of how many staff they have and how many of those staff identity as Black, in addition, to how many Black managers and board members they have.
