You set up your blog in 2013, how has blogging changed and adapted since then?
It’s an incredible huge industry now. In 2013 hardly anyone knew what a blog was and now everyone pretty much has one, wants one, or reads them. They’re taking over and it’s amazing.
You celebrate being a plus size blogger and now you’re launching a new magazine. Tell us more about it, why you felt there was a need for this and what it will cover...
She Might Be is a new online magazine and community featuring plus size fashion, beauty for all sizes, the latest trends, makeup looks, well being posts and so much more. I don’t know of an only online, UK based plus size magazine so there’s definitely a gap for one. I will not only be having well known voices on the website, but also the voices of those who are yet to be discovered and are absolutely fabulous. Plus there’s no waiting for the next edition, content will be posted pretty much every day.
What advice / top tips would you give PRs looking to promote their clients through your blog?
I absolutely adore when someone has just taken a couple minutes to read my blog. If you tell me you’ve read my latest post and mentioned something inside the article, you have my attention! I love the personal touches and when people pay close attention to detail. With my hair I’m obviously no good for blonde shampoos!
Give us some examples of your most favourite sponsored collaborations to date?
Oh I loved taking over Curvissa’s social media for UK Plus Size Fashion Weekend. Creating a Liverpool Guide with Travelodge was also amazing, and I worked with so many great brands there. Creating Halloween looks with Ann Summers & Makeup Revolution also.
Blogging can - to an extent - be seen as a numbers game, however we believe that numbers don't always measure up to engagement. What does success mean to you and how do you measure it?
I’ve never had ‘goals’, I rarely look at stats and I encourage others not to as well. As soon as it becomes a numbers game to you, the fun stops and the passion dwindles. I see it too much!
Do you have a rate card? Can you tell us an example of a cost?
I try and have one but then one of my channels has a sudden influx or DA updates and it’s just a constant update battle! I charge around £100 for a sponsored tweet/Instagram and £200 for a sponsored blog post with full promoting across my channels.
Your biggest channels seem to be Instagram & Twitter, have you found YouTube difficult to get going? If so, why?
I hate filming for some reason, I’m so sarcastic and I just can’t fake the YouTuber high pitch voice and overly happiness so then I think that my videos aren’t fun because I’m cracking a sarcastic comment every 2 minutes. I think it’s more a thing about myself than finding YouTube difficult. I end up watching my own videos loads after I finally make them because I find myself hilarious, sad, I know!
What is your favourite aspect of blogging? … and least favourite?
The opportunities you can gain from blogging, I now have a career in social media and blogging because I was bored one day. It’s such a crazy but wonderful world! I also have SO many friends that I’ve met through blogging. Least favourite is definitely the numbers game, bloggers faking friendships to get ahead. It’s like the celeb world in a way, a lot is set up for exposure.
How do you think brands/PRs can work better with influencers? Any pet peeves?
Get the right people for the campaign; really research who will be good for a brand/client. Utilise social media more with bloggers too! I’ve just been to an event where less than half of the brands actually tweeted they were there, let alone engage with bloggers that they met there online. Wasted opportunities if you don’t use social media to connect with bloggers. More often now bloggers get more engagement on social media than their blogs.
What other bloggers / influencers do you follow and why?
I follow everyone who is really down to earn and isn’t afraid to say negative things, even if they could upset brands... London Beauty Queen, British Beauty Blogger, Vix Meldrew are great examples.
