Glamour unveils key regional findings in beauty survey

Date Posted: Thursday 1st March 2018

In a major survey, Glamour has asked women across the United Kingdom what they really think about beauty and wellbeing today, and the impact it has on their lives – culturally, socially and emotionally. The Big Glamour Beauty Survey has identified some key regional trends and priorities when it comes to beauty. Over 1,500 women aged 16+ were surveyed in December 2017 for The Big Glamour Beauty Survey, with respondents including members of the Glamour Insiders Panel, Glamour magazine readers, Glamour.com users as well as Glamour social media fans and followers.

  • Scotland is the country’s make-up devotees, with 27% of women in Scotland feeling uncomfortable without any make-up. Scots are also most likely to find it difficult to go without lipstick.
  • Wales and East Anglia have the highest percentage of those who could not live without eyeliner.
  • Longer lashes will most likely be a priority in London.
  • Those in the North West are longing for well-defined brows.
  • Those in Northern Ireland are most likely to consider fake tan and bronzer essential to their beauty regime.
  • In the Home Counties 75% of women feel their appearance is defined by their hair.
  • Women in the North East of England are the beauty queens of the gym – 81% of them exercise regularly and they are the most likely nationwide to wear make-up whilst working out.
  • South East 64% of Glamour readers agree that friends define their beauty look.
  • Women in the capital are the most body confident, with 51% of Londoners very confident in their appearance and 79% of them working out purely for physical health benefits.
  • Women in Wales are more likely than those in other regions to say receiving a compliment makes them feel their best (53%).
  •  55% of 16-34-year-olds describe themselves as ‘anxious’, with the highest concentration in the North West where 51% of all respondents suffer with anxiety.
  • The Midlands had the lowest result – yet almost a third (31%) still described themselves as anxious. The cause for this epidemic? Job prospects (75% were anxious about their careers) as well as financial concerns (74% said money was the cause of their worries).
  • 85% of millennials said their top goal in life is to be happy.
  • When it comes to social media, 40% of the women surveyed admitted that the number of ‘likes’ on their social media pages affected their mood, with 75% digitally editing the way they look in selfies and 62% suffering FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) from seeing their friends’ posts.
  • 92% said social media doesn’t define their self-worth, with 93% saying it actually has a positive impact on their lives.
