Harper’s Bazaar revealed a limited-edition July cover in support of the NHS. Copies of the special issue will be distributed for free at major hospitals across the UK as part of Hearst’s involvement in Project Wingman, an initiative that helps frontline NHS staff deal with the stresses of the coronavirus through the creation of ‘wellness lounges’.
The bespoke edition will feature a rainbow holographic cover that includes a hidden message of encouragement. When the cover is tilted, the inspiring phrase ‘Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud’, a quote from the American poet and civil-rights activist Maya Angelou, is revealed across the spectrum.
The lenticular cover has been created to accompany a 22-page portfolio inside the July issue that celebrates the power of creativity to see us through times of adversity. The feature includes contributions from high-profile artists and designers including Marina Abramovic, Giorgio Armani, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dolce & Gabbana, Antony Gormley, Lubaina Himid, Alessandro Michele and Donatella Versace. Drawing on Harper’s Bazaar’s extensive and long-standing heritage within the world of art (illustrious past contributors include Marc Chagall and Andy Warhol), the design for the July 2020 limited-edition cover is reminiscent of Richard Avedon’s famous ‘lenticular eye’ cover for the magazine’s 1965 issue.
