Launching for AW16, knitwear brand John Smedley has collaborated with five British designers across womenswear and menswear, showcasing their championship of British craftsmanship and support for UK design talent. Supported by both the British Fashion Council and the UKFT, John Smedley has reached out to designers who each represent one or more of its core brand values: Holly Fulton for her vibrant use of colour, Claire Barrow for her unique artistry, Phoebe English for her dedication to British craftsmanship, Ashley Williams for colour and texture, and Lou Dalton for her use of unique textures and menswear expertise. Each designer brings an artist’s aesthetic to the collective, which sees all of their knitwear pieces being manufactured by John Smedley in Britain. Close collaboration between the designers, the technical design and manufacturing teams at John Smedley has been key to the project’s success. Considerable technical hurdles have been overcome and innovative techniques deployed to turn the designers’ creative ideas into perfect garments. The contemporary aesthetic of each designer has pushed the boundaries of both the designer’s collections and John Smedley’s production teams to produce knitwear of the highest quality, made entirely in Britain.
