Ellen Levine, former editorial director of Hearst Magazines, the first woman editor-in-chief of Good Housekeeping magazine and an industry icon who helped create O, The Oprah Magazine — the most successful launch in Hearst Magazines’ history — passed away in New York City. She was 79.
“Yesterday, Hearst lost one of its legends and most enduring talents,” Hearst President and CEO Steven R. Swartz said. “Ellen put readers first in every magazine she was involved with, acting as a fierce advocate for women’s health, their families’ wellbeing and the greater public good. Her impact has been felt throughout the publishing industry through the many editors she mentored.”
“Ellen was pioneering and passionate — a connector, mentor and a real force in the publishing industry,” Hearst Magazines President Debi Chirichella said. “Her dedication to readers was inspiring and cannot be overstated. She will be greatly missed.”
