London-based Greek designer, Sophia Kokosalaki, has died at the age of 47. Sophia was known for her elegant take on drapery; she designed gowns for the red carpet, costumes for the Greek Olympics and chic wedding dresses.
Sophia studied Greek and English Literature in Athens before moving to London to complete an MA in womenswear from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. She was taught by the late Professor Louise Wilson and was part of a new wave of British design talent that emerged in the Noughties.
During her career, Sophia attracted a celebrity following including Alexa Chung, Kirsten Dunst and Kate Hudson. In 2001, she collaborated with Topshop and in 2002, she created costumes and uniforms for the Olympic Games in Athens 2004. Then from 2006 to 2007, she served as creative director at French fashion house Vionnet.
In 2012, she launched her first bridal collection. However, in recent years Sophia had retreated from the show circuit.
The fashion world took to social media to mourn the loss of Sophia Kokosalaki. Fashion commentator Sarah Mower via Instagram said:
"Mourning the loss of dear Sophia Kokosalaki, a great talent, sister pioneer of the London fashion new wave of the 2000s, Greek fashion heroine, alumna of Professor Louise Wilson’s CSM MA crucible 1999, and such an amazing mother to her daughter Stelli..."
The causes of Sophia's death has not been disclosed. She is survived by her husband and daughter.
