Refinery29 has announced the launch of its UK platform refinery29.uk which is now live, in addition to its new London-based editorial team. Developing original content across a variety of subjects ranging from style and beauty to news, entertainment, wellness and lifestyle, as well as curating content from Refinery29.com, the site will mirror the content mission of its parent company. Kate Ward, Refinery29’s Vice President of International, has assembled a dynamic and experienced team of 11 to drive the UK launch. To oversee content programming strategy, the company has hired Sarah Raphael as UK editor. Sarah was previously acting editor of i-D, where she directed editorial for the print magazine and i-D.co, which won a Webby award earlier this year. Additional key hires at Refinery29 UK include features editor Gillian Orr, who served as culture and features writer at The Independent; fashion editor Alice Casely-Hayford who previously held positions at Tatler, POP, District MTV and most recently Rankin’s HUNGER Magazine; associate editor Amelia Abraham, previously at VICE; director of branded content Kirsty Hathaway who joins from Analogue Folk; and visual editor Anna Jay, who joins from The Debrief and was recognised by the PPA as Young Art Director Of The Year in 2015. Refinery29 UK’s content will cover stories, trends, news and talent from across the UK, while catering to an audience that is engaged on global issues.
The UK launch is the first step in the Refinery29 global expansion strategy, which will extend to France and Germany in early 2016 with additional markets to follow. The company is expanding its footprint beyond the U.S. to better meet the growing demands of its global audiences and further engage communities in international markets. Refinery29 has amassed a loyal following of over 25 million monthly unique visitors in web traffic and an additional 75 million viewers across all other platforms.
