Pinterest has revealed its Top Trends List for 2019. To do this, Pinterest compared global search volumes from August 2017-July 2018 to August 2018-July 2019 to identify 100 insights with significant search volumes and consistent growth.
Trends include:
Beyond binary
From flexible pronouns to unisex nurseries, a more accepting view of gender identity is on the rise. Of all age groups, Gen Z tends to expect more gender-neutral options. E.g. 59% of Gen Zers expect to see gender-neutral options on forms, compared to 40% of Boomers.
Conscious consumption
There's a shift towards more conscious consumption as people re-evaluate their impact. E.g. using fewer products, and more sustainable ones, as well as keeping an eye on waste. In a Nielsen study, 81% of people strongly agreed that companies should help to improve the environment.
Finding balance
Next year people are predicted to be thinking about wellness in a more everyday way, as they look for easy habits to counter anxiety, stress and burnout. Trends suggested are journaling and dancing.
Home hub
Homes are becoming offices, gyms, even waterfalls, thanks to new technology and flexible office policies. This means that there is a big growth for industries like home décor, athleisure and delivery services.
Internationally inspired
It is easier than ever to get your hands on different cultures. Artisans, chefs and everyday people alike are using digital media to share their stories, tales of heritage and tradition, inspiring others to try something new.
Pampered pets
Increasingly millennials, who might be delaying traditional milestones like marriage are turning to pets for companionship. In the UK more than 50% of pet parents, aged 129 to 28, said that they'd prefer to cut expenses on themselves for their pets.
Responsible travel
Tourism is becoming more eco-conscious. For some, this means cleaner transport methods or taking staycations instead of long-distance holidays. Sweden has coined new words for eco-friendly travel habits: Flyskam (flying shame) and tagskryt (train bragging).
Re-wilding
Getting outside can lower stress and increase energy. For others, indoor plants feel like a breath of fresh air.
Space everything
Space tourism is starting to feel real as companies prepare for potential 2020 launch dates. More focus comes from the current focus on STEM educational topics - science, technology, engineering and maths.
90s re-run
There are 90s references all over, from high-fashion runways to retro devices. Gen Z is discovering 90s culture for the first time and is putting its own twist on the trends.
