Condé Nast has announced that it is closing Vogue Russia and ceasing publishing due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and related censorship laws, CEO Roger Lynch said today.
Condé Nast suspended publishing operations in Russia in March, and today said “the escalation in the severity of the censorship laws, which have significantly curtailed free speech and punished reporters simply for doing their jobs, has made our work in Russia untenable,” a statement emailed to Condé Nast global employees reads.
Condé Nast has operated in Russia for over 20 years, with titles including Vogue Russia and Russian editions of GQ, GQ Style, Tatler, Glamour and AD. Around 10 per cent of Russian staff will remain to fulfil outstanding obligations, while enhanced severance, benefits, employee assistance, outplacement programmes and guidance for applying for open positions in other markets will be offered to the remainder. Condé Nast is the owner of Vogue Business.
