Two years on, Nishi now runs an award-winning blog which covers everything from beauty to travel to lifestyle, as well as a successful YouTube channel.

When and why did you decide to start your blog?
My blog was born in 2015 out of my frustration to find the perfect yellow toned foundation and concealer or corrector for my dark circles. At the time, I was working as a freelance bridal make-up artist, and working with a variety people led me to realise that essentially we all have similar skin concerns. Most of my clients were Asian and I couldn’t tell you how many times I was asked about the best brands/products that cater for olive skin and yellow undertones. I’d only discovered blogs not long before I started, and I didn’t really understand how it worked but I just wanted a little piece of the internet to share my knowledge, latest finds and product recommendations.
I like to keep it real and will always be honest, transparent and authentic. My blog posts and videos on base products; foundation and colour correcting, in particular, are always received very well, so I hope to continue testing new products to bring my audience better/ more affordable alternatives.
You cover mostly beauty, but with aspects of travel and lifestyle, do you think it’s important for bloggers to focus less on a particular area?
I think that one of the best things about blogging is that there are no rules and that a blog can be whatever you want it to be. The best, and often most successful sites are those where you can see the blogger has a true passion for it - and if they’re passionate about more than one subject, then I see no reason for them to focus on just one area. For me, beauty will always be my first love (very closely followed by travel) but I think that as time has gone on and I’ve grown as a person, I enjoy sharing other aspects of my life with my audience. Whether that’s through vlogging at a family party, a photo diary from a weekend getaway or simply just me rambling to the camera while I’m applying my makeup!
You also have a YouTube account, do you think this will ever become your sole focus?
I make videos and write blog posts purely because I enjoy doing both, and I often go through phases where I might prefer one over the other some weeks. However, my blog will always be my baby purely because it’s completely mine and I have full control over it. Youtube is the perfect visual platform to reach out to a wider audience, however, personally, I don’t think it’s wise to put all my eggs in one basket. If Google decided to shut down YouTube in the same way as Vine disappeared overnight, a lot of content creators would be left with nothing if they don’t have a blog or other social media accounts to fall back on. So I think there will always be space for traditional blogging and I can’t see this changing anytime soon.
Are there any other areas you would like to branch into?
As cliché as it sounds, collaborating with a brand or having my own make-up line specifically aimed at women of colour, would be the absolute dream! In terms of branching into other social media platforms, podcasts have risen in popularity a lot recently, however, I’m not sure that talking into a microphone is really me. We all have our strengths and weaknesses and I’m quite content juggling my blog, YouTube and Instagram for the time being.
At the moment I'm focusing on creating better content, improving my camera skills and bringing back more beauty content on YouTube as it’s something I frequently get asked for. I think my site and channel will naturally develop into something else as I grow up with it but for now, I want to focus on improving my content.
How do you think your readers view your relationships with PR’s? How do you think bloggers and PR’s can work better together?
I always abide by ASA guidelines so that I am completely transparent and so I think (hope) that my readers know I am always honest, regardless of whether I buy a product myself or collaborate with a brand on some sponsored content. I think that brands/PRs could extend the range of people they work with to include more micro influencers so that we don’t see the same bigger bloggers collaborating on sponsored content all the time. There should be mutual understanding and better communication about budgets and deadlines; there’s nothing worse than being told to add more information or (follow) links once you’ve already started working on the post. Acknowledgment for how much work goes into creating a piece of content, whether that’s the photography for a blog post or filming and editing a video is always great. Some of the best PRs and brands I've worked with are those who have been personable and friendly - it makes all the difference!
Do you have a rate card? Can you tell us an example of a cost?
I’ve never actually been asked for a rate card! I don’t have set rates as I think each collaboration opportunity is different. There are so many potential ways to collaborate with a brand and often when they approach me, they either have a budget in mind or I put forward what I'm happy to work for depending on the amount of work required. I find that most people are quite happy to negotiate to find a compromise that suits us both which is brilliant.
What are your favourite brands and hero products at the moment?
Oh, I have so many favourites! MAC will always have a special place in my heart as it’s the first brand I ever discovered that catered for my skin tone. I still use so many of their products to this day, but I’m also a huge fan of Urban Decay, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Armani Beauty, Tarte, Pixi and more recently Burberry Beauty. I switch up my products a lot as I’m always on the lookout for something newer and better, but the ones I always go back to are the Pixi + Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse, Alpha H Liquid Gold, Giorgio Armani luminous silk foundation, Bobbi Brown deep peach corrector, Too Faced Born This Way concealer and MAC Fix +.
Do you have any top tips for budding influencers?
Don't follow in anyone's footsteps, create your own! Stay true to yourself, create great content and don’t focus on what others are doing - It’s dangerous territory and so many people (myself included) often fall into that trap, but it really doesn’t achieve anything, so you should just ‘do you’! It’s important to remember that it takes time to grow your audience and you should make an effort to connect with your audience and engage with everyone including other influencers on social media. Try to be yourself, have your own opinion and don’t be afraid to show your personality through your content as that in itself will make you unique and interesting.
What other bloggers/influencers do you follow and why?
I follow too many other influencers to keep count, but off the top of my head, some of my favourites are:
